SHARPER - European Researchers' Night 2018

SHARPER is the name of one of the nine Italian projects financed by the European Commission for the European Researchers' Night in 2018 and 2019.

SHARPER stands for SHAring Researchers’ Passions for Evidences and Resilience and aims to engage the public in discovering what it means to be a researcher and the role that researchers play in building society's future by exploring the world based on facts, observations and the ability to adapt and interpret increasingly complex and changing social and cultural contexts.

SHARPER is scheduled on 28 September 2018 in the cities of Ancona, Cagliari, Caserta, Catania, L'Aquila, Macerata, Naples, Nuoro, Palermo, Pavia, Perugia, and Trieste to tell about the passion, discoveries and challenges of researchers from all over Europe through exhibitions, shows, concerts, games, conferences and hundreds of other initiatives for the general public. The SHARPER project brings the European Researchers' Night back to Trieste and involves all of the city’s institutions and the research centres belonging to the "Trieste City of Knowledge" protocol.

On Friday, 28 September 2018, the creativity of the  SHARPER Trieste team will transform Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, the city’s hallmark square, and the surrounding old city centre into spaces where the public can meet young researchers and discover the most current research challenges. The University of Trieste, SISSA, ICTP, AREA Science Park, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, ICGEB, OGS, INAF, and ITS Volta will be waiting for you at the village “Trieste City of Knowledge” set up in the square with laboratories, experiments, demonstrations, meetings and workshops.

In the morning - from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. - the square will be the venue of activities for schools (by reservation), in collaboration with Trieste NEXT 2018.
The activities for the general public will be held from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
On Saturday and Sunday, 29-30 September, the activities of the village “Trieste City of Knowledge” will continue with  Trieste Next 2018.

ELETTRA IDEA: THE MUSIC OF MATTER

Discover what makes a crystal different from another solid: the Elettra IDEA (Interactive Display of Electron and Atoms) installation uses music to explore the properties of matter and applies scientific data to inspire musical composition.

IDEA (Interactive Display of Electrons and Atoms)
Loredana Casalis and Andrea Lausi, artistic directors
Giovanni Andrea Panizon, design and production
Marco Buongiorno Nardelli, music and videos

At IDEA, our goal is to guide the public into the microscopic world of materials, electrons and atoms, through a perceptive installation. A cardinal highlight of this experience is the immersive sound environment attained exclusively through sonification on the crystal structure of various materials. Sonification, or the representation of data by acoustic means, is a complementary alternative to visual approaches and, from an artistic point of view, provides the raw elements for a compositional process that transcends the materiality of the original information: the data flow is open to processing as the main element of a data-based compositional environment.
The sounds created by IDEA are in turn the acousmatic backing track of “Un Giro d’Anello" for string quartet and fixed media, composed by Marco Buongiorno Nardelli as a tribute to the ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste. The full quartet can be heard at www.materialssoundmusic.com.

LA BELLEZZA DEI DATI

I dati scientifici possono essere rappresentati da un suono? Riflessioni a cavallo fra musica e scienza sulla sonificazione dei dati e sulle potenzialità di questo processo. Incontro con Marco Buongiorno Nardelli, University of North Texas (USA).
